This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Hypoglycemia is a common event in type 1 diabetes that has significant consequences. Acute myocardial infarction is a reported rare consequence of hypoglycemia. It is unclear how hypoglycemia may lead to myocardial infarction. One possibility is through impairment of endothelial function through several possible mechanisms. This proposal is designed to gain preliminary data on the effect of hypoglycemia on endothelial function in healthy control subjects. If hypoglycemia is found to impair endothelial function future studies will be pursued to explore the duration and mechanism of this effect and it the responses are different in type 1 and potentially type 2 diabetes. Endothelial function will measured via reactive hyperemia in ten healthy control subjects before and during hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp. Each subject will be studied twice once with hypoglycemic clamp and once during euglycemic clamp. This will allow as to separate the effect of hyperinsulinemia from the effect of hypoglycemia.
