This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The process of biomineralization is the mechanism by which biogenic skeletons are formed. In the case of coral, there skeletons form a record of past climate change. An important aspect in this project is the determine the ability to distinguish calcite from aragonite crystals within the intact coral skeleton and will answer fundamental questions about the how corals make skeletons in different environments, some considered thermodynamically unfavorable. In combination with other analytical techniques, Raman spectroscopy will be used to analyze the mineralogy.
