PRELIMINARY STUDIES OF SYNSTATIN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The syndecans, a family of four cell surface receptors (heparan sulfate proteoglycans), are cell adhesion receptors and regulators of signaling by growth factors/growth factor receptors and cell adhesion receptors, especially integrins. They are expressed on all adherent cells and regulate cell behavior during development and cancer. Our major focus is syndecan-1, which is abundant on epithelial cells and appears necessary for the maintenance of normal epithelial cell adhesion and morphology. We are carrying out feasibility NMR studies for determining the structure of synstatin, which is involved in cell adhesion and breast cancer.
