Utility of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in assessment of carotid plaque in acute cerebrovascular symptoms

Some patients who have a mini stroke have narrowing of one of the blood vessels in the neck. Recent evidence suggests that people with severe narrowing should undergo urgent surgery to deal with the furring. Imaging the diseased neck arteries using special magnetic resonance, immediately after an acute attack, could provide useful information about the possible inflammation or irritation in the arteries. We think that there are some patients who have slight narrowing of the artery, which is inflamed (angry). We think that these patients may be at higher risk of having another stroke and may benefit from more aggressive treatments.. This might assist in selecting which patients would benefit from surgery and which patients could be managed with medicines only. It could also have cost effectiveness benefits for the National Health Service. This project will help us in developing new techniques to assess the blockage of the neck arteries in more detail.
