Circumnuclear gas in radio active galaxy nuclei

The project will image all nearby ellipticals that are radiosources in infrared emission lines and map the kinematics of the gas. It will model the gas density and temperature, deduce the mass of the nuclear black hole and the star formation rate in the central 10 parsecs, and measure gas flow rates in non-equilibrium regions of the central structure. The roles of cosmic ray heating and extra ionisation from stellar populations will be assessed in the energy balance. The project will synthesise results over the volume complete sample, examining correlations with mass, radio power, star formation rate, emission line strength and x-ray power, and inferring the duty cycle of activity and the black hole and circum-nuclear toroid mass distributions.
