In this past year we have demonstrated that phthalates can impact the phenotype, specifically cell proliferation, of T47D cells in culture. Further, this phenotype is altered in the presence of endogenous progesterone suggesting endocrine disruption via progesterone receptor as a potential mechanism by which phthalate exposure may later breast cancer risk. These findings also suggest that exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds such as phthalates maybe more important during key windows of susceptibility, such as pregnancy.
