ABSTRACT
The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Salmonella Biology and Pathogenesis is an international scientific
conference that brings together researchers with a shared interest in understanding the fundamental biology,
pathogenesis, and immune response to Salmonella serovars. This meeting is a longstanding conference, that
was originally held under the auspices of the American Society of Microbiology; the 2023 conference
(rescheduled from 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) will be the second GRC, and will be held at the
Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco (Italy), a well-established site for the GRC organization. The 2023 meeting will
be held July 23-28 and will have an associated Gordon Research Seminar to (i) provide students and postdocs
a basic background in the concepts, principles, and mechanisms involved in different areas of Salmonella biology
and pathogenesis; (ii) promote the interaction of junior investigators with their peers and selected senior
members of the field (keynote speaker and discussion leaders); (iii) provide feedback on their research, thereby
sharpening their presentation skills and the sophistication of their discussions in preparation for the main meeting
and beyond. There is a need for a conference dedicated to the biology of Salmonella infections, because
Salmonella is studied not only as an important cause of disease, but its well-characterized biology, genetics and
infection models have made it the pathogen of choice to interrogate many fundamental aspects of biology,
including innate and adaptive immunity, post-transcriptional gene regulation, and the function of the gut
microbiota. The GRC will encompass a broad range of topics, from epidemiology and vaccines to cell biology
and gene regulation. Attendees will include an equal distribution of independent investigators, post-doctoral
scholars, and graduate students. There will be nine seminar sessions with session leaders that will provide an
overview of the topic and stimulate discussion from the attendees. The 2023 meeting will be organized by Chairs
Renée Tsolis (University of California, Davis) and Michael Hensel (University of Braunschweig, Germany) and
the vice-chairs Leigh Knodler (Washington State University) and Dirk Bumann (Biozentrum, Basel, Switzerland).
This meeting provides a forum where cutting edge research will be presented. There are slots reserved in
thematic seminar sessions for presentations by postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, giving them an
opportunity to share their discoveries and gain exposure. The inaugural GRS of this conference will be co-chaired
by Lizbeth Camacho (University of California, Davis) and Joshua Newson (ETH, Zürich, Switzerland). This
meeting provides an environment that enables networking and collaboration among investigators and gives post-
doctoral researchers and graduate students access to leaders in Salmonella biology and related fields. The
program includes new investigators that have not previously presented their research at this meeting, and
includes sessions that reflect the emerging importance of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella and novel strategies to
overcome antibiotic resistance.
