Structural Racism and the Progression from Chronic Kidney Disease to
End-Stage Kidney Disease--Diversity Supplement
Project Summary
The goal of this two-year Research Diversity Supplement, “Structural Racism and the
Progression from Chronic Kidney Disease to End-Stage Kidney Disease,” is to provide Dr. Niki
vonLockette with the research experience and mentorship to build a funding and publishing portfolio in
kidney and related diseases' health disparities, focusing on the impact of structural racism. This diversity
supplement will provide an opportunity for Dr. vonLockette to expand her methodological expertise and
scientific knowledge related to kidney health and health disparities, and develop a new, independent
research agenda as a kidney health disparities scholar. This study will examine the role of structural
racism (SR) in explaining racial disparities in the progression from chronic kidney disease (CKD) to end-
stage kidney disease (ESKD) and will compare three geographic levels (country, metropolitan, and state)
at which we can measure SR to identify the spatial level where SR is most impactful. The study of SR's
impact on health disparities is still nascent. Explanations that offer deeper analysis into how SR creates
these persistent disparities can offer greater clarity and precision to identifying effective disruptions to the
impact of structural racism on health disparities such as these.
