This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Biostatistical Support Unit (BSU) is one of the multi-user core research facilities currently supported by the National Institutes of Health-RCMI Center for Environmental Health at Jackson State University (JSU). The overarching goals of the BSU are to: a) strengthen its biomedical research infrastructure; b) provide all aspects of bio-statistical services to RCMI investigators; and c) foster interdisciplinary research collaborations among the investigators and their peers at JSU and other institutions of higher learning. In recent years, BSU has significantly contributed to the success of the RCMI Program at JSU, by providing RCMI investigators with a wide array of statistical related services from experimental designs to data analyses. The impact of BSU on the RCMI Program is evidenced by at least four peer-reviewed publications, 13 research projects - support, 12 consulting services for grant proposals, theses, dissertation, and planning for the Data Technology Coordinating Center future activities during its present reporting year. Also, BSU through its teaching and computer-lab support has generated and/or supported twelve research projects conducted by the Environmental Science graduate students in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. This Unit has also worked closely with the PIs of the four pilot projects that are included in the RCMI grant renewal application by ensuring adequate study designs and data analysis methodologies. It is also anticipated that the BSU will provide advice in data collection, analysis and interpretation, as well as publication for these pilot projects, once the funding is approved. BSU during the past year has been vigorously engaged in efforts to improve its productivity and efficiency through continuous interactions with internal and external advisory committees and consultants. The Unit has maintained its routine support and activities by keeping computer hardware and software in proper functional order through upgrades and regular maintenance.
