This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the daily requirement of vitamin D is different in individuals with different skin color. Vitamin D is obtained either from dietary sources or is produced in the skin by exposure to sunlight. However, in dark-skinned individuals, production is reduced by increased amounts of melanin, which is the pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color. The reduced vitamin D production, in some individuals, could result in vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk for developing osteoporosis or prostate cancer. One hundred participants will be recruited for this study.
