This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. To characterize the pharmacodynamic properties of oral oxycodone across a full range of doses in sporadic opioid abusers. To characterize the pharmacodynamic properties of oral hyrocodone across a full range of doses in sporadic opioid abusers. To characterize the relative abuse potential of oxycodone and hydrocodone in the population by comparing it to hydromorphone, an opioid of know high abuse potential, and placebo. We hypothesis that all three drugs will produce a subjective profile associated with abuse liability. There will be a disassociation between the physiological potency of these drugs and their abuse liability profile. Doses producing physiologically equivaltent effects, the relative potency for producing subjective effects related to abuse liabiilty differ in magnitude whereby hydromorphone> oxycodone> hydrocodone.
