Abstract:
The Lone Atrial Fibrillation Genebank study is currently being conducted by The Cleveland Clinic over a two year period to generate information about the hereditary (genetic) basis of atrial fibrillation. The etiology of atrial fibrillation remains poorly defined. Genetic, biochemical, or hormonal factors may contribute to the development or perpetuation of lone atrial fibrillation. The purpose of this study is to establish a genebank repository of blood samples along with collection of phenotypic data specific to atrial fibrillation to be used for future research. We will collect blood samples and data from 500 patients who have presented to or who are presenting to the Cleveland Clinic for inpatient or outpatient evaluation for lone atrial fibrillation. The data includes the collection of baseline clinical data obtained from the medical records, demographic, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, laboratory and angiographic data (if applicable). Subjects will be interviewed for basic demographic data and a questionnaire will be given to the subjects to collect current medical data. The subjects' medical records will be reviewed to collect medical history and capture his/her disease status at the time of enrollment. The registry will enroll an additional 500 normal controls from subjects presenting to the Cleveland Clinic for inpatient or outpatient evaluation.
