This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The Bronx Nutrition and Fitness Initiative for Teens (B'N FIT) program is multifaceted and tailored to the developmental level of adolescents. We will conduct a randomized clinical trial designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the B'N FIT program intervention after six months compared to a control group receiving standard medical care alone. Outcome measures include changes in: Anthropometric measurements (weight, body mass index (BMI), waist, and neck circumference) Biochemical markers of type 2 diabetes mellitus (insulin, glucose, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), microalbuminuria) Cardiovascular risk factors associated with obesity (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, C-reactive protein, homocysteine,22-26 lipoprotein(a),27-30 apolipoprotein B.)27-30 Fitness 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. 5. We hypothesize that after six months B'N FIT participants will show significant improvement in many of these outcome measures when compared with the control group. The results of this study will be used to develop an application to fund: a) a one and three year evaluation of B'N FIT using a larger sample size; and b) evaluation of the value and cost-effectiveness of individual B'B FIT components and the long term effects on the various outcome measures.
