RENAL TRANSPLANTATION IN CROSSMATCH POSITIVE RECIPIENTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The presence of donor-specific antibodies present a significant barrier to organ transplantation due the risk for development of hyperacute or accelerated rejection leading to graft loss. UNOS registry demonstrates that the average waiting time of sensitized patients is more than twice those who are not sensitized and some may never receive a transplant. The aim of this study is to decrease the sensitization level of these patients by studying a pre-treatment regimen consisting of IVIG, Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF), and Rituximab to desensitize patients with positive crossmatches and allow successful living donor renal transplantation in patients who have limited options.
