PRIAPISM IN BOYS AND MEN: INCIDENCE AND PREVENTION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research study is to learn more about a condition called priapism, which is a complication of sickle cell disease. Priapism occurs when there is sickling of red blood cells inside a penis causing an erection which is painful and which lasts longer than normal erections. Besides causing pain, priapism can lead to damage to the penis. There are many things about priapism that are not understood. We would like to learn how often men and boys have this problem and how it may be related to time of day, activities or medicationss. We would also like to learn if diaries are a good method of monitoring and recording the occurrence of priapism. If we learn more about priapism, we may be able to treat and prevent it more effectively.
