This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
As over half of the INBRE pilot projects require mass spectrometry in some form, a core facility providing mass spectrometry services has been established. Because INBRE alone could not create or support such a facility, more than 10 other entities within the University of New Mexico system contributed towards the purchase of instrumentation and the development of the facility. A Ph.D. level manager has been hired and began service in April 2005. Instrumentation totaling approximately $750,000 was purchased and installed in early 2005. The facility will provide exact mass analyses of organic synthesis products, identification of proteins, characterization of proteins and peptides by mass, and other proteomics applications to INBRE and non-INBRE members. The facility is under the supervision of a PhD mass spectrometrist and an expert in the maintenance and repair of research-grade instrumentation. This creation of this facility will be a substantial improvement in the biomedical research infrastructure in the State of New Mexico and a significant improvement in biomedical research that requires mass spectrometry.
