SCREENING FOR LUNG CANCER IN THE HIV PATIENT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. HIV patients are living longer due to advanced antiretroviral therapy. Cases of lung cancer in these patients are increasing with an excessive mortality rate. We determined to examine a wide range of clinical and pathological variables to elucidate the risk factors most critical to survival, and to determine whether or not our longitudinal clinical care of our HIV-positive patients needed to change given the excessive mortality of HIV-infected patients with lung cancer. The Lung Cancer SPORE and HIV clinic databses have generated 87 HIV-positive lung cancer patients from 1989-2003. This is the largest single institution cohort of such patients. Our long-term goal is to use CT scans to diagnose lung cancer earlier in the HIV-infected patient so that early therapy can be initiated with possible long-term survival.
