The goal of the proposed Phase I research is to design a web-based training program to teach screening and brief intervention for substance abuse problems to primary care providers. Specifically, we will outline the didactic content to be covered; develop instructional design strategies, draft tools and supplements; and plan for a website to serve as a long-term resource. As part of the design process, we will consult with subject matter experts and conduct interviews with primary care clinic managers. We will also develop one prototype skills module and conduct formal usability testing of that module with a usability expert and end-users.
