英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Green tea extract is available without a prescription and is sold as a dietary supplement. It is not approved to prevent or cure any disease and has never been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss or the treatment of obesity. Previous research studies in humans indicate that green tea extracts may help overweight people lose weight. Green tea has not been studied in patients who are obese. The main purpose of this double-blinded, randomized study is to evaluate whether taking a green tea extract results in more weight loss over 18 weeks than taking placebos in obese subjects. The investigators will also study whether green tea extract affects body composition and as energy metabolism. They will also study whether green tea extract can change the levels of serum triglycerides and cholesterol. A secondary purpose of the study is to see if individual differences in a gene called "catechol-o-methyl transferase" are related to weight loss.
