This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The overall objective of this research program is to understand the link between AD and AMD. The overall hypothesis is that AD and AMD share a similar etiological pathway due to a common alteration in the metabolism of amyloid protein precursor. The purpose of this study is to obtain preliminary data in preparation for a larger study of this clinically relevant problem. The long-term goal would be to develop a set of sensitive biomarkers, comprised of electrophysiological, anatomical and biochemical markers to allow for an early detection of these two devastating diseases.
