This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We propose to develop a normative database of 3D images from 150 individuals who have no diagnosed craniofacial disorders. The purpose of creating this normative database is two-fold. The primary aim is to characterize typical craniofacial features in children and young adults without craniofacial disorders. We will accomplish this by taking anthropometric measurements and performing shape analysis of the 3D images. The second aim is to quantify differences in craniofacial characteristics between typical children and those with diagnosed craniofacial differences. We will do this by comparing the normative data to measurements obtained in children with craniofacial differences. The development of a normative database of 3D images will build upon data collection begun as part of 2 prior studies that we have conducted in the craniofacial research center. The normative data we currently propose to collect will be immediately useful in a continuation of one of those studies, in which we will identify the craniofacial features affected in individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. More broadly, the normative data we currently propose to collect will be an invaluable resource to be used in the future for investigating craniofacial variation in a wide variety of craniofacial disorders.
