英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This pilot study is being done to determine the best method of characterizing head shape differences observed in individuals with sagittal synostosis and their relatives. Data collected and analyzed in this study will be used as preliminary data in a larger research proposal to identify causes of sagittal synostosis. Sagittal synostosis results in scaphocephaly, a long narrow head shape with a prominent forehead and narrow bulging occiput. In a few families, additional relatives have been diagnosed with sagittal synostosis. Some families have reported family members with long narrow heads or large foreheads, who have not been diagnosed with sagittal synostosis. We propose that sagittal synostosis is a complex condition due to genetic and environmental factors. At this time causes of sagittal synostosis are largely unexplained. Development of a reproducible and accurate three-dimensional measure of head shape will be important for future studies to identify genetic causes of sagittal synostosis.
