THROMBOPHILIC ABNORMALITIES PREDISPOSING TO ARTERIAL AND VENOUS THROMBOEMBOLISM

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this research study is to investigate many aspects of thrombophilia (tendency to form blood clots). These aspects include demographic, genetic and environmental factors indlueincing blood clotting (also called thrombosis), as well as the diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis. Participants will have been found to have a clotting disorder. Because genetic (hereditary) factors are often involved in clotting disorders, the study of family members of patients with thrombosis can provide valuable information. In addition, healthy individuals without any clotting problems are needed for comparison studies. A primary goal of the UNC Thrombophilia Program is to use information and blood samples collected from many differenct people, including those with and without clotting problems, to develop new strategies for evaluating and treating people with abnormal blood clotting.
