SUMMARY The main goal of this research training plan for Ms. Jasmin Johnson's academic and scientific development is to define the underlying mechanisms driving exercise protection from rotenone-induced neurodegeneration and exacerbation of 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurodegeneration. This research goal is related to the expansion of studies proposed in Specific Aim 3 of the parent grant. This proposal is designed to the test the novel hypothesis that increased baseline ROS from long-term exercise conditioning sensitizes dopamine neurons to the acute oxidative challenge with 6-hydroxydopamine, while providing protection from mitochondrial inhibition by rotenone. In addition to a robust and rigorous research training plan involving innovative new reagents, there is a strong mentoring plan that supports Ms. Jasmin Johnson's future career plans in a strong scientific and academic environment within the PI's laboratory and supported by the Co- Mentor. This supplemental application will provide increased diversity of development of a minority researcher as a biomedical clinician scientist.
