It is an extension of the work initiated in CRDPJ 262911-02, 2003-2006, at McMaster University regarding the operations of iron blast furnace in Canada.   A new Index HTR to characterize the bosh gas quality was proposed to assess blast furnace performance in recent years.  With data from Stelco, Algoma Steel and Siderar, HTR can be related to the changes in daily production and in the enhancement of stability of the operation.   With Dofasco's data collected under the conditions for constant daily production, consistency in product quality and stability of the operation have been related to HTR.     It is aimed to investigate relations between HTR in tuyere practice and furnace productivity, energy efficiency, product quality, iron ore and coke quality, quality of injectants, and  the cost of operation, etc.  Initially, the investigation will cover the periods of steady operation, then, for drifting and transient periods. Preliminary results of replacing RAFT by HTR in tuyere practice to be established with our partners, will be tested in a selected group of about 10 companies all over the world, in our judgment, that have operating data of high quality and competent technical staff to test our hypothesis.     The most critical region, below the Thermal Reserve Zone, remains to be the dark corner of blast furnace due to lack of measurements.  Quantitative relation between tuyere practice, through HTR, and product qualities will be formulated and validated. To install this sub-model based on HTR analysis (along with other sub-models, such as that iron ore reduction and tuyere practice, mechanisms of the formation of cohesive zone) inside the shell of overall heat and mass balance model is the ultimate challenge in this project.
