The research computing facility of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has several HP UNIX workstations and PCs which are heavily used by faculty, post-docs, graduate students and visiting researchers. It is very slow and sometimes impossible to run complicated research programs such as stochastic simulations, simulated annealing algorithms, and etc. The request is for funding to purchase a Linux Cluster and several PCs.  The Linux Cluster will speed up the computation for complicated research programs and make some research projects possible, and the PCs will be placed in graduate students' offices so that they have access to the Linux Cluster. All members of the Statistics group and Applied Mathematics group (faculty, post-docs, graduate students and visitors) will have access to the Linux Cluster. Research  areas currently being undertaken by members of the groups using the facility include: biostatistics, bioinformatics, robust statistics, survival analysis, Bayesian model determination, capture-recapture methods, Spatial Markov processes, empirical likelihood, estimation of forest fire hazards, medical and industrial applications, parameter estimation via EM algorithm, tropical circulation model, climate modeling, public health studies and disease control.
