Funds are requested to purchase a portable CTD-rosette system and oceanographic winch to enable precise control of water sampling from the research vessel John Strickland and other research platforms. The requested system will permit real-time characterization of water column properties and remote controlled collection of samples at precise points along physical, geochemical and biological gradients. This will allow results from sample analyses to be accurately related to conditions in the ocean, and so advance our understanding of the interaction between physical, chemical and biological processes in the coastal ocean.
