Computing facilities to support research in equilibrium models and algorithms with application to energy markets

The applicant requests funding to purchase computer hardware and software to be used by the applicant and several graduate students in their research programs.  The research involves computer models of economic equilibrium in markets, with a particular focus on energy markets.  For example, one area of application is in the study of how to design competitive markets for electric power.  Another application is in the evaluation of policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions due to the use of fossil fuels.   Because the computer models are very large and difficult to solve, the research requires powerful computing hardware and up to date software.  One important aspect of the research is the creation of improved algorithms for the solution of the large scale models. If the computer hardware and software is funded, the proposed research will create new tools for government and business to better address many pressing problems of energy and the environment.
