Chemists develop an understanding of chemical reactions and materials by making measurements using several types of instrument. Each technique gives some information and insight; and, when all of this is put together, a coherent picture may emerge. However, one fascinating area of chemistry is almost impossible to study using some of the most powerful techniques in chemistry. These systems are single molecular layers on low surface area solids. Low surface area samples yield very little signal in XRD or NMR experiments, making them extremely hard to characterise. Hence, characterisation relies heavily on infrared spectroscopy measurements. Funding is requested for a highly sensitive and stable FTIR spectrometer, so as to study selective catalytic reactions on metal surfaces.
