The University of Waterloo Environmental Isotope Laboratory (UW EIL)is a research facility specializing in the analysis of environmental isotope abundances in natural organic and inorganic materials in support of hydrological, geological and biological research undertaken at the University of Waterloo. The EIL also provides isotope analysis to 360 national and international clients on a fee-for-service basis, with preferred rates for NSERC-funded researchers (over 50 researchers). The UW EIL operates 12 mass spectrometers including nine state-of-the-art continuous flow instruments(CF-IRMS) interfaced variously with elemental analyzers (EA), high temperature elemental analyzers (PYR), gas chromatograph-combustion(GC-C), TraceGas or modified Gilson autosamples for high precision isotope ratio analysis of hydrogen(2/1), carbon(13/12), nitrogen(15/14), Oxygen(18/17/16), sulphur(34/32), chlorine(37/35)and bromine (81/79), plus six liquid scintillation counters for beta-decay counting of tritium. The EIL has a full time manager supported by the Department of Earth Sciences and a staff of 12 technical and two administrative personnel supported entirely by laboratory revenues, as well as numerous undergraduate and graduate students as well as post doctoral fellows engaged in various individual research project. The EIL is also actively involved in training of IAEA Isotope Hydrology Fellows.
