英文摘要
New technologies are more and more crucial to the mining industry faced with greater demands on performance all the while having to meet new challenges. It needs contributions form various scientific fields to develop and implement new technologies. The research and development needed to sustain our mining industry must be multidisciplinary. The applicant is developing close collaborations with his colleagues form his departments as well as other departments to explore new technologies and developments for mining applications. He is working with colleagues from mining, metallurgy and is also participating actively in the NSERC supported McGill Design Chair for Extreme Environment in the department of mechanical engineering. The applicant research activities build upon his past expertise in the field of mine backfill, field instrumentation and various in situ drilling and sampling research projects. He has initiated team research work with colleagues from the field of microwaves, robotics and mechanical engineering to explore innovative technologies with potential applications in drilling, mechanical breakage for road headers and tunnelling systems. To this effect knowledge and experience gained from working in the field of backfill and rock mechanics is put to contribution. The research program initiated by the applicant involves the combination of electromagnetic energies and mechanical energies to the breakage processes involved in drilling or rock boring applications. This ongoing research has produced already one M. Eng. thesis and five scientific papers.
