We propose to combine a programme of field measurements and novel numerical models to investigate topics in two areas: 1) the influence of climate, both past and present, on  the shape and rate of landscape change in regions of ice-rich permafrost in northern Canada and elsewhere; and 2) how 3D fracture networks in permafrost, shallow reservoirs, ocean muds, and other geological materials assemble, and what determines properties such as fracture connectivity, length, and aperture --which have critical utility in issues as diverse as CO2 sequestration and contaminant transport in groundwater.
