Application of combinatorial optimization to real-life problems

Beyond their specificities, real-life problems as diverse as manufacturing and distribution planning, cellular phone network design, or efficient resupplying of on-orbit satellites, to name just a few, can be translated into mathematical models of the same family. It follows that they can be solved by mathematical and computational methods that have a lot in common. Solving each of them both requires a good understanding of the physical laws that govern its workings, but also mastery, or even further development, of the appropriate tools. In this project, I plan to study several classical optimization models and to apply known models to a number of design and planning problems that arise in the fields of manufacturing, distribution, telecommunications, satellite resupplying, and hospital management.
