Nonlinear network optimization methods on static and temporal networks

The work reported in this progress report covers the period of April 1, 2001 to the end of September 2005. Current ongoing work that I expect to complete by the end of March 2006 is described as well. My research during this period includes the mathematical modeling of transportation flows on networks (persons, vehicles, freight) and methodological aspects of these models (nonlinear cost network flow models, variational inequality models) and in particular, dynamic models of route choice on urban transportation networks. The calibration, validation and application of these models on certain problems arising from practice and the further development of the EMME/2 and Dynameq interactive-graphic software package for persons and vehicular transportation planning continue to represent my main applied research interest. As will be detailed in the body of the proposal, I intend to continue my research activities in these areas. I have been named Professor Emeritus as of June 1st 2004. This will allow to involve students at the M.Sc. and Ph.D level in the theoretical and practical aspects of the mathematical modeling of transportation systems and the application of these models. Most of these students, upon leaving the University, were able to continue similar work in their employment.
