A large number of micropeptides have been found in the cytoplasm and their potential structural ability to regulate intracellular signal transduction exists. However, their participation in this process is still largely unexplored. This study will investigate the function of micropeptides of mitochondrial origin, thereby addressing the question of whether micropeptides, either produced by the cell as part of protein catabolism or not, have signalling and/or regulatory ability inside the cell.
