A superspeed centrifuge that can achieve gravitational forces above 50,000 x g will be used by the three applicants to significantly advance their research programs in different areas of biotechnology. Samples ranging from minute micro-litre volumes in multi-well plates up to one litre can be processed by this centrifuge which facilitates experiments using molecular biology, protein chemistry and biochemistry. The research will advance our knowledge in food safety and the role of biofilms in spreading food borne disease, in bioremediation and the application of pollutant degrading bacteria, and in developmental biology with the study of stress-genes and their role in the growth of potatoes and fish in adverse environments.
