Controlled attachement of organic molecules to semiconductor surfaces is expected to enable a new class of hybrid molecular electronic devices and sensors with the potential to significantly enhance the functionality of conventional microelectronics. This research program is concerned with understanding the electronic coupling between organic molecules and semiconductor surfaces. Solution based and gas phase reactions will be employed to create high quality organic molecular monolayers on silicon substrates. The structure and electronic properties of these systems will be studied with a range of surface science probes. Electrical transport through molecule/silicon junctions and the role of molecular layers in modulating transport through the silicon substrate will both be investigated. These studies of organic molecule/silicon interfaces are expected to enable the development of novel molecular electronic devices (memory and/or logic) as well as sensors (chemical and biological).
