In all scientific endeavours, there is an absolute need for the ability to control and manipulate experimental parameters. Our research on plant, fungal and microbial biology requires an ability to grow our experimental organisms under precisely controlled and reproducible conditions in order to begin each experiment from the same "starting point". The controlled environmental chambers that we have requested will give us this basic capability along with the ability to manipulate temperature, humidity, light quantity, light quality and the composition of atmospheric gases. This fundamental tool will provide a common platform from which broad ranging research can be conducted; from the induction of gene expression by environmental factors, through the evolution of drug resistance and the ecology of plant host / pathogen interactions.
