The necessity for the development of new materials is the unceasing requirement for high energy conversionefficiencies for fuel cells, batteries, electrolyser and industrial chemical synthesis applications in Canada. Theproject proposed herein aims at developing enabling technologies for the production of renewable andsustainable energy that will permit the production of electricity from solar energy and utilization of this energyto minimize the damageable effect of carbon dioxide (green house effect). This study will permit to makeselective and effective catalytic materials for the reduction of CO2, thus considering the electrochemicalreduction from a non fossil, clean energy source. To this effect, the utilization, in Quebec, of hydroelectricityseems attractive. However, we are proposing an approach more versatile and less susceptible to have an impactto the environment by using an electrochemical solar cell. We will take advantage of the specificity of thecatalysts developed to increase the overall yield of the reaction. In this project we will develop a newelectrochemical solar cell integrating different functionalities to the conversion of CO2 into renewable fuelsand valuable chemical products. The core technology of this concept is the use of semiconductor surfaces thatwill be partially modified by nanometric metal catalyst, efficient for CO2 reduction and on which surfacesamines that react selectively with CO2 will be grafted.
