One of the major challenges facing synthetic chemists working in the area of molecular materials is the design of dual property materials e.g. combining electronic with magnetic or optical properties. The approach outlined in this proposal addresses this challenge. The goals of my research program are to develop new materials through (i) the discovery of rational synthetic routes to new tetrathiafulvalene building blocks and their metal complexes, (ii) understanding how molecular structure influences the properties of the compounds and in the long term (iii) to use these compounds for the design and construction of new materials with technologically desirable properties, in particular to target dual property magnetic and electronic materials. Molecular and supramolecular chemistry play an important role in influencing the design of the proposed systems, as do recent challenges in the field of materials science such as molecular magnetism, molecular conductors, spintronics and nanotechnology.
