The instrument required for the vertical axis wind turbine research will enable accurate measurements of the aerofoil performance under various turbulent wind conditions.  The proposed load cells will be connected to various promising aerofoils to finetune the salient features (prior to building the refined prototype aerofoils to be mounted onto our existing vertical axis wind turbine structure).  The highly-fluctuating lift and drag which detect the performance of the aerofoil will be correlated to turbulent flow parameters quantified via an existing, NSERC supported hot-wire system.  Numerous highly qualified personnel are expected to be trained using the fine facility.  Many of these young minds will likely end up in the sustainable energy sector, moving Canada forward in attaining a greener environment without sacrificing the quality of life.
