Acquisition of elemental analyzer system and balance for C,N, and S content and isotope analyses

The University of Manitoba was recently awarded a $7.4 M from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to establish the Manitoba Regional Materials and Surface Characterization Facility.  A Secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) laboratory was established as part of this facility.  The departments of Geological Sciences (Fayek, Hawthorne, Halden, Camacho, Bekker), Chemistry (Freund), Mechanical Engineering (Cahoon, Chaturvedi), Electrical Engineering (Buchanan), and several other researchers greatly benefit from the SIMS laboratory at the University of Manitoba.A theme of this proposal is to enhance a collaborative study of biogeochemical carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles on various temporal scales and in different environmental settings as well as the understanding of alteration that these biogeochemical signals experienced by diagenesis, metamorphism, radiolysis, and subduction to the mantle.  Recently, Fayek established a CFI and RTI funded stable isotope laboratory, since instrumentation for stable isotope analysis did not exist at the University of Manitoba.  Although this lab is primarily dedicated to SIMS research, it will also be used by other faculty and students for stable isotope studies.  The laboratory has the mass spectrometer with two peripherals: thermal conversion elemental analyzer (TC-EA) and GasBench III for C and O isotope analyses of carbonates and dissolved inorganic carbon in waters.  Combined, this infrastructure permits isotopic characterization (e.g. C, S, H, and O) of some materials.  However, these devices are neither appropriate nor efficient to isotopically characterize reduced compounds of C, N, and S in sediments, which are pivotal to the research of the PI and Co-applicants.  The online system for C, N, and S isotope analysis of small samples with high precision and accuracy and large sample throughput is still missing in the department and at the university.  Therefore, the infrastructure requested here will be used to establish a capability that currently does not exist at the University of Manitoba, but is necessary for cutting edge research of the applicants as well as other researchers in other departments.
