Essential repairs for Ti: sapphire laser systems

We request funding of $68,407 for items needed to repair two fast Ti:sapphire laser systems and bring them up to performance specifications. These instruments have a replacement value of ca. $750,000 and are essential for maintaining and extending the research programs of the applicants. These lasers are used to investigate the fast dynamic behavior of highly excited electronic states of metalloporphyrins and related materials, in solution, in sols and gels and in polymer films and solid matrices. The results are of importance in the design and characterization of new materials for NIR solar energy capture and storage using non-coherent photon upconversion by triplet-triplet annihilation. These lasers are also used as light sources for multi-user fluorescence microscopy experiments mounted by the Saskatchewan Structural Sciences Centre, in particular for fluorescence lifetime imaging experiments.
