Canola/rapeseed production and processing in Canada contributes $2.5 billion annually to the Canadian economy. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the oilseed industry in Canada, research and development is key. The continuous provision of improved canola/rapeseed cultivars strongly contributes to the long-term success and steady growth of the Canadian oilseed industry. High erucic acid, low glucosinolate rapeseed (HEAR) comprises a small but steadily growing sector of the Canadian oilseed industry with an annual growth rate of over 15%. The University of Manitoba will continue its successful high erucic acid rapeseed cultivar development work and expand the research and development effort in high erucic acid rapeseed to include the development of herbicide tolerant hybrid high erucic acid rapeseed, the development of super high erucic acid rapeseed and the development of blackleg and sclerotinia disease resistant germ plasm. Hybrid high erucic acid rapeseed seed production studies will also be initiated once suitable germ plasm has been developed.
