This project proposes novel approaches and algorithms that can enable the introduction of a new generation of smart audio-video multimedia terminals. The project aims at two different applications: hands-free audio-video wireless phones terminals and high-end VoIP multimedia terminals. In both applications, the terminals will be auto-configurable, easy to use, and offer a superior broadband audio quality and conversation experience. The project focuses on the audio performance of these terminals. The next generation of hands-free audio-video wireless phones that are considered in this project will be able to handle multiple standards including wireless VoIP and VoWiFi. They may also be incorporated in other devices such as PDAs and may be used as speaker phones. The size and weight limitations of these phones, coupled with the multi-standards requirement will have a negative impact of their audio quality. This project proposes novel speech quality enhancement, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation approaches to improve the audio quality in this new generation of wireless phones. The advanced high-fidelity VoIP multimedia terminals that are considered in this project are equipped with microphone arrays and optional Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras. They will be able to identify and track different talkers in a room. These terminals will explore the advanced features of VoIP networks such as broadband high fidelity VoIP, stereophonic telephony, and audio-video integration. This project explores novel robust broadband adaptive echo cancellers, beam-formers, and audio-video tracking systems, to enable this new generation of smart high-end VoIP terminals.
