Dopamine is an important chemical made naturally by the brain. Dopamine communicates with the brain cells by attaching itself to specific proteins called receptors. These receptors are located outside the cells and transmit a biochemical signal inside the cell following the attachment of dopamine. In this proposal we will explore the structural components of the human receptors involved in the attachment of dopamine. In addition, studies will be performed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms leading to the formation of the biochemical signal inside the cells when the dopamine attach itself to its receptors. Results obtained from these studies will help us to understand how dopamine and its receptors control brain functions such as learning and memory.
