Liquid/gas and liquid/liquid flows are ubiquitous in nature and industry. Raindrops falling through air and the spray of fuel inside a car engine are just two examples. When such flows interact with a solid surface, as for example when a raindrop slides down a car windshield, then the flow is complicated by the presence of the "contact line" that forms at the intersection of the two fluids and the solid. Contact line flows have intrigued scientists for decades, and yet there are fundamental aspects of such flows that remain poorly understood.
