This proposal is concerned with the purchase of a polarimeter to measure optical rotations of chiral molecules. The previously used 40 year old instrument has died and replacement parts are no longer available. Measurements of optical rotations are essential for publication purposes. Students and post-doctoral fellows in organic chemistry, biochemistry and materials sciences depend on the availability of a polarimeter at the University of Manitoba to measure optical rotations of chiral molecules. There is currently no other polarimeter at the University of Manitoba. Measurement of optical rotation is critical for publication. Without it research papers will not get accepted and the publication of research results will be delayed. Shipments of research samples to other Universities is not practical and will eventually become very expensive.
