A multi-factorial framework for risk prioritization of foodborne pathogens

Canada must continue to have a safe and high quality food production system. Ensuring safe food is crucial to maintaining and improving both the competitiveness of the food industry and international trade. Also, food borne illness impacts the Canadian economy through healthcare costs and lost productivity. In order to target resources and research effectively, it is necessary to identify which food safety risks are most critical to Canadians. A variety of factors, including public health, economic effects and social implications, must be considered when trying to rank the importance of a food safety risk. This research project will develop a Prioritization Framework that will incorporate these factors for various food safety risks. Once developed, the Framework can then be used to compare different food safety risks and rank them. Risk managers, policy developers and researchers can use the Prioritization Framework to help them identify, target and possibly anticipate serious public health risks caused by food borne illness.
