Recent developments in 3D numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation have made it possible to improve our understanding of earthquake rupture processes and the interior structure of the earth using a full wave-equation approach. We plan to calculate the source parameters for earthquakes in southern California with updated 3-D Green's functions to further understand the tectonic processes within this region. We will automatically determine source locations and mechanisms for major global earthquakes in real time based upon simulations of seismic wave propagation in a 3D global tomography model. We also enhance our knowledge of the earth structure by forming the tomography inverse problem based upon adjoint methods and the setup of 3D numerical simulations. We will take advantage of the abundant broadband seismic data, choose the proper inversion techniques, and produce new generation tomographic images that will shed light on the geodynamical and tectonical processes deep inside the earth.
